Hyperlabs Prototype Vehicle (Timmy)
Project type
Engineering Prototype
Date
August 2023
Location
Richmond, VA
I built an RC Vehicle Prototype for Hyperlabs at VCU between semesters over the summer. This prototype was used to test how our components worked together before building them into our actual robot. We also used this robot at multiple recruiting fairs and attached boards to the sides of the robot to let people sign their names on the robot.
The robot was built from an old Ottoman Sofa Foot Rest that I attached motors and wheels to. I put all the electrical wiring and circuitry on the inside of the Ottoman and added LED lights to illuminate everything. The vehicle was powered using two LiPo batteries wired in parallel to maximize run time and controlled using an RC Controller wired to a motor controller.
After using the vehicle for a few events, the shaft of one of the motors snapped due to the large moment forces of the wheels with the long extension. We could have solved this by shortening the shaft or adding a support but we decided to upgrade both motors for our actual robot so we could have more power.
