Role
Founder & President
I am the Founder and President of VCU's Engineering Student Org Council(ESOC). The Engineering Student Org Council(ESOC) is a group with a focus on creating monthly meetings to develop students' leadership and business skills, simplify and consolidate access to university resources for student orgs, and be a centralized hub to support collaboration, visibility, and resource-sharing among the student orgs.
This council was something that I thought about for a bit before finding the courage to start it myself. I started this group because I realized that nearly all of the engineering student orgs were struggling with many of the same issues. I realized this when reaching out to other orgs looking to collaborate for HyperLabs Robotics Workshops, and talking to my friends in other orgs. I started by organizing the first Engineering Student Orgs x Professors & Department Talk to get as many students and department faculty in the same room as I could. At this meeting, we discussed the specific issues that the orgs were having and found out if this was something that everyone thought would help. The meeting went very well, and many new issues arose from both the student orgs as well as the department faculty, and everyone agreed that this type of group would be very helpful. I then organized a second meeting where we discussed what the student orgs wanted from this group. Over the summer, I finalized the specifics of the group and started compiling and creating student org resources. Now the ESOC is more established and growing with over 15 active student orgs and meetings each month.
